Loving
and training children at
orphanages in Mexico
Jakob
and Charity Miller have served in Mexico since 2006 at Good Shepherd
Orphanage near downtown Morelia, Mexico. Jakob does basic upkeep and
maintenance, oversees major and minor construction projects, runs
errands, interacts daily with the orphans and staff, coordinates
projects with visiting teams, encourages and supports the workers,
manages the garden and chickens, and does whatever else he can do to
help out. Charity loves being a mother, Jake’s wife, taking care of her
household, and partnering with Jake in serving.
Jakob grew up in Portland, Oregon. His childhood was filled with
adventure: three-wheelers, camping, shooting, bike-riding, friends and
learning. Schooling included Rose City Park Elementary, Columbia
Christian and Benson Polytechnic (HS) where he majored in automotive
mechanics while learning about many trades. In 1999, Jake
volunteered to teach English in Morelia, Mexico, for one year, living
with a Mexican family and becoming fluent in Spanish, although he did
not intend to return there.
Charity also grew up in Portland, excelling at all levels of school
including David Douglas High School. She consistently earned top marks
while participating in competitive
gymnastics, basketball, volleyball, and track & field,
competing at
State levels and earning awards. As a young adult, she began to suffer
the long-term effects of chronic fatigue syndrome and fibromyalgia.
Jake and Charity met in 2002, fell in love, and married in 2003.
Shortly thereafter, she returned with Jake to
Mexico where they have been serving orphananges since since 2006. Says
Jakob, “I cannot imagine a job better designed for me and
my various skills and interests."
